Stony Brook Energy Center Joint Repairs
Warren's high performance epoxy provides both a time and cost-effective solution for repairing pipeline joints
The Massachusetts Municipal Wholesale Electric Company (MMWEC) hired Hennigan Engineering to perform a video inspection on their Stony Brook Energy Center’s circulating water pipe system. The prestressed concrete cylinder pipes (PCCP) are approximately 66 inches in diameter.
Upon completion of the inspection, Hennigan noted that the pipes were in good condition. However, there were five joints between pipe segments that had significant degradation that needed repairs, as well as an additional 12 joints that were described as degraded. Due to a tight schedule and budget, MMWEC needed a solution that was both time and cost-effective.
Hennigan Engineering contracted A&W Coatings to rehabilitate the 17 joints with Warren Environmental’s 301-14 epoxy coating. The pipe was located 16-feet underground and 800 LF long. A&W worked with a confined space rescue team to ensure safe workspace entries and exits. The A&W crew cut termination points, water blasted, and acid etched the joints to prepare the surface for coating. Once prepared, A&W taped off all joints to ensure a straight line around the joints while applying our 301-14. All 17 joints were hand troweled by the A&W technicians. The crew worked diligently and completed the job on time and under budget.
